Zimbabwe Safaris

Southern Africa’s Hidden Gem

Zimbabwe might be Africa’s best kept secret. It combines the perfect mix of wildlife viewing, conservation, and outdoor adventure (think kayaking, walking above Victoria Falls, and safari by railcar!). We take you far from the crowds and immerse you in a land of more than 50,000 elephants, where you can get out of the safari vehicle on bush walks and even view wildlife up close from an ingenious underground look-up blind.

  • The Most Active and Varied Safari — Encounter Africa up-close and in unique ways: from a “look-up blind”, in an open-air rail car, on a sunset cruise, and the ultimate thrill—on foot!
  • Small Groups with the Same Expert Leader Throughout — Our small group sizes ensure great wildlife encounters and close access to your guide.
  • Our Safaris Give Back — We actively partner with the local communities, providing employment, income, and promoting wildlife conservation.

Everything You Need to Know

Zimbabwe has a distinct “dry season” (May-early-November) and “green season” (late-November-April). Both offer fantastic wildlife viewing possibilities, making it a great destination to visit all year round. Each season in Zimbabwe has something unique to offer, with a diverse range of wildlife and a small fraction of the crowds other countries in Africa receive. See below for a full explanation of Zimbabwe’s different seasons to decide when is best for you.

Zimbabwe’s varied landscapes and world-class wildlife viewing offer seemingly endless opportunities for exploration—we’ve highlighted our favorite activities below!

We have carefully selected our accommodations for their exclusive locations—away from the crowds and in the heart of the wilderness, their high level of comfort and service, and their commitment to community and conservation.

You will find our intimate lodges to be relaxing oases after the thrill of a day on safari. Enjoy multi-course, gourmet meals under the stars, spacious and secluded tents and chalets, with en-suite indoor and outdoor bathrooms and hot showers.

We believe in the power of tourism to empower local communities and have selected lodges that employ a similar philosophy. Camelthorn Lodge was built on communal land bordering Hwange National Park, providing employment and putting tourism dollars directly in the hands of the local people.

Community & Conservation

WT is deeply committed to the interconnected relationship between responsible tourism, local communities, and conservation. Zimbabwe is a shining example of how impactful this can be. Our trips donate directly to a wide array of initiatives such as sponsoring schools, dental care, eye care, solar water pumps, anti-poaching teams, and most recently bringing white rhinos back to a community-owned conservation area around Camelthorn Lodge in Hwange National Park—for the first time in over 50 years! See below to learn more about the exciting initiatives your travel dollars help support.

This was my third trip to an African country and it exceeded all others. The game viewing, the fabulous lodges and the amazing knowledge, passion, and experience of our guide made this one of the most unforgettable travel experiences I have had to date. All personnel on this trip get five stars!

We absolutely LOVED traveling on the Elephant Express, LOVED our daily rides in either the Land Rover or Ranger, and we were in awe every day of what we saw literally in the first few hours of each day! Absolutely blown away by our sundowner locations—every night a different theme and entirely different location! Attention to detail was amazing!

A well-designed, interesting itinerary, a wide variety of activities to keep us engaged, loads of delicious food, and beautiful, clean, comfortable, luxurious accommodations.

No other safari will ever compare. Our every need was anticipated and we spent a luxurious vacation in a natural setting. The best trip we have ever been on!

The lodges were superb! The best part of our trip was the guides who were informed, interesting, organized, and kind.

This was our 4th Wilderness Travel trip and it definitely stood out as one of the best. We were very impressed with the local lodges and it was nice to see how involved they are in supporting their communities.

Whether by a campfire under a camel thorn tree, in the bush next to the Zambezi River with a complete kitchen and staff ready to cook any meal desired, by the shore of a watering hole watching the African sunset, the lodges were absolutely spectacular, a true five-star elegance that need only to be experienced to be believed! Bar none, this is not to be missed!

Wonderful, welcoming hosts who made us feel they truly cared about our comfort.

The only overall rating possible for the trip is ‘excellent.’ The attention to detail, the quality of the accommodations and cuisine, the attentiveness of all staff, and the five-star quality of our guide combined to create a trip that exceeded all expectations.
