Explore the great monuments of this renowned city on a walking tour. Istanbul is home to the thousand-year-old Haghia Sophia, once the greatest church in Christendom, and the Blue Mosque, with its blue-themed interior, replete with panels of floral-motif tiles (20,000 of them) and graceful arabesque stenciling. Visit Topkapi Palace, where the sultans' wives, concubines, and eunuchs lived inside the “forbidden” harem quarters. Enjoy a guided walk through the Covered Bazaar to the Spice Market, and board a sunset ferry to sail up the Bosphorus Strait, one of the most famous stretches of water in the world. Criss-cross between Europe and Asia as you savor views of the Dolmabahce Palace, Rumeli Hisar Castle, and traditional waterfront homes from the Ottoman period.
Declared capital of Roman Asia by Emperor Augustus, the archeological complex of Ephesus is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. Here you'll walk down Marble Street, where the ruts of chariot wheels can still be seen etched in the pavement, and visit the striking Library of Celsus, with its elegant two-story facade.
In the lush valley of the Meander River Delta, visit Priene on the slopes of Mt. Mycale. Often compared to Delphi for its natural setting, Priene is also known for its extensive Temple of Athena, built at the order of Alexander the Great and still in a remarkable state of preservation. On the flanks of Mt. Latmos, explore the beautiful 2nd century Temple of Zeus, hidden in the endless grove of olives. Then head to Bodrum, where whitewashed, bougainvillea-clad houses surround natural harbors lined with yachts. Enjoy the flavor of the southern Aegean as you walk narrow streets lined with artisan shops and visit the Castle of St. Peter, with its Museum of Underwater Archaeology, and the remains of the Mausoleum of Mausulus. (Join our optional mid-trip extension to Lake Bafa, Aphrodisius, and Pamukkale, which begins on Day 6 and is followed by Cappadocia.)
Spread across the heart of Turkey is the volcanic moonscape of Cappadocia, with its mushroom-shaped rock formations into which the local people have carved homes. Christianity arrived here in the 1st century AD, as evidenced by the ornate frescoed churches hewn deep into the soft tufa rock. Enjoy a hike from the pretty village of Ortahisar to the unspoiled hamlet of Cavusin through vineyards and apricot orchards, visit the ancient underground city of Kaymakli, 13 levels deep, where thousands of Byzantine-era villagers sought refuge from invaders, and enjoy panoramas of the towering stalagmites that give this landscape a surreal quality. Enjoy a whirling dervish performance at an original 12th century Seljuk caravanserai. Depart on Day 11 via Istanbul.

      What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 2+, Easy to Moderate, according to our trip grading system. This is a relaxed cultural adventure, with several walks or hikes of 2-4 hours that should be "easy-to-moderate" for the average active traveler. The cultural walks and hikes are a fascinating part of the trip, often bringing us to small villages or off-the-beaten-path ruins accessible only on foot. All hikes are optional.
      Review Trip Level Details

To ensure an enjoyable adventure in Turkey, all participants should make a special effort to be in good physical condition by engaging in a regular exercise regimen before the trip.

Istanbul and the coast have a predominantly Mediterranean climate, with Cappadocia in semi-arid Central Anatolia offering slightly cooler temperatures, making this a comfortable climate to visit year round.

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

Overnight at Hotel Levni in the heart of Istanbul's fascinating walking district...meals on your own\r\n \r\nAbout Istanbul: The Old City, or Stamboul as it is sometimes known, is a great district to explore on foot. Many of its most famous sights are within easy walking distance of one another. The Haghia Sophia was once the largest enclosed space in the world and the greatest church in Christendom. Set atop a hill, the domed basilica of this 6th century cathedral, known as the Church of Holy Wisdom, was the dominant feature of the city's skyline until the 16th century. Mehmet the Conqueror converted the Haghia Sophia into a mosque following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and Ataturk converted it into a museum in 1935, but it has now been converted back to a Mosque. The restored Basilica Cistern, close to the Haghia Sophia, is an underground chamber built by Justinian in 532 AD for storing the imperial water supply. Also nearby is the Sultan Ahmet Camii, or Blue Mosque, with its six slender minarets visible for miles around. It is known as the Blue Mosque for its blue-themed interior, replete with panels of floral-motif tiles (20,000 of them) and graceful arabesque stenciling. Topkapi Palace, heart of the Ottoman Empire and home of the sultans for four centuries, is a marvelous imperial labyrinth set on the tip of a peninsula where the Golden Horn joins the Bosphorus. Although the original palace was constructed in the 15th century, most of the buildings we see today date from the 18th century. Of particular fascination is the Harem, the set of \"forbidden\" apartments where the Sultan's wives, concubines, and eunuchs lived. Topkapi is also the place to feast your eyes on the fabulous treasures of the sultans, from jewel-encrusted daggers to golden caskets to the 86-carat Spoonmakers Diamond.","Breakfast":0,"Lunch":0,"Dinner":0,"Overnight":"","Travel_Type":"","Quotation":"","Quotation_Attribution":"","Itinerary_Location":"","Latitude":"","Longitude":"","Brief":false},{"DayFrom":2,"DayTo":2,"Headline":"Istanbul","ActivityOverview":"","EstimatedLength":"","ActivityLevel":"","ItinBlock":"Head out with your guide to visit the great monuments of Istanbul, a city straddling two continents and once the capital city of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. The charm and lifestyles of the Sirince villagers remains intact, with villagers growing grapes for their local wines as well as olives for their own olive oil. Sirince is a wonderful place to mingle with locals and to absorb the Old World atmosphere. After lunch, continue to Ephesus, declared capital of Roman Asia by Emperor Augustus, who turned it into a major trading and banking metropolis. In this remarkably well-preserved Roman city, where Marc Anthony romanced Cleopatra and St. Paul preached, explore on foot for about 2.5 hours among finely restored theaters and homes, stroll the marble-paved Arcadian way, and feel transported back to Roman times. The city's magnificently restored ruins include a library, temples, agoras, baths and brothels, marble streets, and amphitheaters.
