The Best Time to Hike the Camino de Santiago
The Camino de Santiago can be done any time of year; however, the months of April-June and September-October are the best months to experience the trail. We time our trips for this ideal hiking weather and book our hotel rooms years in advance—every detail is taken care of for you so you can relax and truly savor the moment!
From April-June the days are warm but not too hot. You can expect mostly sunshine, though in Galicia’s rugged and verdant landscape, showers can appear any day. The fields are green, and wildflowers carpet the countryside. We avoid the hot and crowded summer months, especially on the plains of Castile, this is not a time you want to be out hiking! In September the temperatures drop to comfortable ranges again, and we can see harvest activity underway.
April to May
Springtime is a spectacular time to walk the Camino de Santiago, when wildflowers shroud the countryside, migratory birds gather, and warm days (mid-50s) and cool nights (high-30s) make for perfect pilgrimages. These months also see occasional showers, so pack accordingly.
June
This month promises the best of both worlds. Expect clear skies, daytime temperatures in the low 70s, and quiet paths before the summer crowds descend.
July to August
Europe goes into vacation mode and temperatures often soar into the 80s, making these summer months a bit too crowded and hot for an experience that meets WT standards.
September
The fall season is one of our favorite times of the year, when temperatures range from the 50s to high 70 and the region experiences little rainfall and fewer people. This month is also the start of the harvest season when vibrant festivities abound.
October
Just like September, this shoulder month promises mild weather and fewer crowds, a perfect way to conclude WT’s season on the trail. This month also sees higher chances of rain and wind, so be sure to pack layers.
November to March
Winter brings worse conditions in sections of the trail, notably that which passes the Pyrenees mountains, which can receive heavy snowfall and volatile weather.
